when helping hurts

There is an important role the government needs to fulfill for protecting the vulnerable, but understanding that role properly, as well as thoughtfully considering to whom it should apply, is something that is receiving too little attention in our modern society.

This article in the Washington Post illustrates the problem of creating vulnerable people as the unintended consequence of setting out to help. Surviving in the social safety net is not an aspiration, but there comes a point when the economy is so distorted that private opportunity is no longer available as an alternative. Woonsocket, R.I., may be there.
