Empty chair day?

Clint Eastwood offers a puzzling performance at the Republican National Convention and an internet meme is born. There’s been a lot of discussion and analysis of Eastwood’s speech, uh, presentation last week. At this point, though, it seems that it’s main effect has been to crystallize a feeling among a portion of the population that with President Obama there is less there than meets the eye (and ear).

Timothy Dalrymple explores some reasons for this feeling in this essay. Read the whole thing, but here’s a key pull quote:

“President Obama has consistently been absent, more concerned about branding than leadership, with image and atmospherics than truly rallying the troops and harnessing our resources and solving our most pressing problems.”
